Confused by USA Traffic Lights? Read this…

Hi All,

I think one of the most confusing things about driving in the U.S. (and there aren’t many) are the traffic lights.

The usual traffic light sequence in America is….

Red – Green – Yellow – Red.

Turning right on a red

This is the rule that takes some getting use too, as it tends to go against what we are taught when learning to drive. However if you come to a set of traffic lights that are red, and the coast is clear to turn right, then you can.

You must come to a halt before making the turn and also give right of way to any pedestrians using crossings.

Just too slightly confuse the issue, remember to watch out for any sign posts that state “No right turn on red”.

Filter lights

When traffic lights have filter arrows there are come basic rules to follow. If the arrow is flashing and pointing left it means that oncoming traffic have right of way.

If a green arrow is flashing and pointing?right it means pedestrians have right of way.

Traffic light positions

Traffic lights are positioned on the far side of the junction on posts at the roadside or sometimes suspended on cables over the intersection.

According to research we spend approximately two years of our lives stuck in front of traffic lights!!!!

Are?there any tips you?can add to this blog to help new drivers in the USA?

OR are there any other topics you’d like me to blog about?
