How To Fight Driving Fatigue

Recently The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)car bedestimate that there are 56,000 sleep related road crashes annually in the USA, resulting in 40,000 injuries and 1,550 fatalities.

Below is® guide to fighting driving fatigue.

While in the car

  • Keep your eyes moving, in states like Kansas you can drive in a straight line for hours, this can cause something called Highway Hypnosis, where the driver blankly stares at the road ahead without registering the environment around him. Tell tale sign’s can include late breaking and slow responses. To prevent this keep your eyes moving. Top Tip – Check your mirrors frequently.
  • Posture - Keep your head and shoulders back and push your bottom against the back of the seat. Keep your legs flexed at an angle of roughly 45 degrees  and not fully extended. Remember this is a seat not a bed.
  • Keep moving – Ignore cruise control, vary your speed and get involved in the driving. Whack the radio on, chew some gum and although you may appear mental, talk to yourself!
  • Environment – Keep the car at a cool temperature, not baking hot. Alter the radio station to keep away from soft, lullaby music.

Before you get in the car

  • Leave early - Give yourself plenty of time, there’s no need to doo 400 miles in one sitting.
  • Eat before you go - Don’t skip breakfast, you’ll need the energy however don’t go crazy and gorge yourself, as this can make you lethargic.
  • Plan to take breaks – Even if you don’t think you’re tired, get out of the car and stretch, wake your body up.

Remember - Drinking coffee works in the movies not in real life. In the end the best cure for fatigue is a good nights sleep.
