U.S. Rent A Car Blog Hits 700 Posts

Hi all,

Despite my negligence this year, the U.S. Rent A Car Car Hire USA blog has just hit 700 posts, an achievement we are all quite proud of.700 posts

The blog itself has been live since 2009 but it took us a bit of time to find our feet and figure out exactly what we wanted to be. Originally we posted reviews of Orlando and top 10 lists etc but for us it felt like every other corporate blog, it lacked personality.

The blog really took off when myself and Simon started writing specifically about car rental and making the posts more personal and even sometimes adding opinion. (shock, horror)

The blog is now a major communications tools for usrentacar.co.uk and posts and features have been included in other media sites, most recently due to our coverage of the International Driving Permit issue.

Here is our top 10 most read posts of all time.

NB: I have not included hits directly to our homepage or book usa car hire page.

  1. Alamo Car Hire Now Accepting Visa Debit For Security Deposit
  2. How Can I Guarantee A Ford Mustang?
  3. Why We Are Number 1
  4. Alamo Car Hire Choice Product

Does Anyone Actually Read The usrentacar.co.uk Blog?

Hi all,

Today I was looking through a suppliers marketing  introduction, it’s basically a .PDF form designed to sell this supplier to us. One of the pages, listed its popular blog, citing some statistics that made me think about our own little blog. Which then lead me to check our own statistics…

Unfortunately our statistics only start from March 2009 but interestingly only 7011 visited the blog in 2009.

Amount of Posts - 655 including this one.

Amount of visitors – Total amount of visitors since 2009 is 210,663

Amount of Page Views – 734,512

All though these statistics are not that impressive if compared to our main website www.usrentacar.co.uk the social team are pretty happy with these figures, this may shock some of you but USA car hire isn’t the sexiest thing in the world but we try our best to at least make it interesting.

Looking at where our traffic comes from its interesting to see how the rise of social sharing sites has boosted the blog’s traffic.

Top 10 Referral Sites

  3. facebook
  4. Twitter
  5. Trip Advisor

So to answer my original question, yes someone does read this blog… .and actually its quite a few of you :-)
So thanks very much… and keep up the good work.

5 Things To Consider When Renting A Car

Hi all,

Car hire in the USA can seem quite a daunting prospect, here at usrentacar.co.uk we try to make something that can be complicated as simple and easy as possible.

Today’s post revolves around 5 key things you need to consider when booking your Florida car hire. I will attempt to cover what I believe to be the most important parts of your hire determine by questions we get asked by customers.

Insurance

Our reservations staff answer questions all day regarding insurances included within our car rental packages. Customers should be looking for these insurances as the absolute minimum.

CDW (collision damage waiver) or LDW (Loss damage waiver) both offer the same insurance feature. As long as you adhere to the rental policy of the supplier you will not be held responsible for the cost of replacement or repair to your hire vehicle.

UMP (Uninsured Motorist Protection) up to $1m Liability Cover. Offers an Uninsured/Underinsured/Hit-and-Run Motorist Protection (UMP) that provides the renter and family members travelling together in the rented vehicle with up to $1,000,000 of non-stacked coverage for bodily injury sustained while driving the rental car, and caused by another driver who has no insurance, minimal insurance, or is a hit-and-run driver.

SLI (Supplemental Liability Insurance) up to $1m Liability Cover. All drivers included on the rental agreement will not be held liable for third party claims for bodily injury or property damage resulting from an accident.

All our packages (Silver, Gold & Platinum) include these insurances, recently we have also added the new Platinum package which offers additional coverage.

Reimbursement for any physical loss or damage to the Rental Vehicle for which You are responsible under the terms of the Vehicle Rental Agreement, including: (Total section limit: GBP 2,000.00)

  • Physical damage to windscreens, tyres, and undercarriage.
  • Towing costs relating to the loss or damage.

If unintentionally locked out of the Rental Vehicle.

  • Our supplier will pay up to GBP 100.00 to open the Rental Vehicle.

Pay to replace a lost or stolen Rental Vehicle key, including replacement locks and locksmith.

  • charges up to a maximum of GBP 300.00 for each and every claim.

Please note that the additional Platinum insurance is exclusive to usrentacar.co.uk and is not provided directly with the supplier but through our third part insurers, for more details please see our terms.

Our Platinum rate was added due to continuing feedback from our customers who were being offered the additional service locally but at a rate we deemed to high.

Car Size

Its important not to undersell your parties needs; a family of 4 with luggage is not going to comfortably fit in the cheap Economy 2dr model. I have come across many a holiday maker who thought it would be cheaper to purchase the smallest vehicle available and then haggle locally over an upgrade.
The problems they come across are these; firstly the supplier can see that you wont fit in the economy with your 4 pieces of luggage and child seat in tow, secondly they guy behind the desk works on commission for what he can sell, he gains less from giving you a real cheap deal. Thirdly, the rates we offer are specifically designed for the UK and European market, purchasing locally means all the individual insurances have to be priced separately and all incur tax so this can bump your price right up.

The other important factor to remember when selecting a vehicle is that our suppliers do not guarantee make or model of their vehicles, for example an Intermediate Sports Utility is described as a Ford Escape with Dollar Rent a Car however within this category of vehicle also falls the Jeep Liberty and the Jeep Compass. So when selecting your vehicle bear in mind that due to the fact we cannot guarantee make or model of the vehicle we also cannot guarantee luggage space or additional features.

In car hire terms bigger is always better.

On Airport / Off Airport

Something to consider when picking your car rental supplier is where their vehicles are located. On usrentacar.co.uk we show you each supplier and provide information stating either if the supplier is On airport or if their car lot is Off airport collection provided by a free shuttle bus service.

Now for some, on airport or off airport doesn’t really matter but for people with small children or elderly relatives the difference between a 10 min bus journey or walking across the road to a car park can make all the difference. Make sure you know where your supplier is located.

Online reputation

There are quite a few car rental brokers out there at the moment, so apart from price how else should you be thinking about before booking.

Here at usrentacar.co.uk we offer two review types; firstly we offer independent reviews about our own company via our link up with Trust Pilot which we launched in May and secondly we offer reviews about the suppliers themselves provided by our customers after the rental has taken place; these reviews are available here Car Hire USA reviews and can be manipulated to show reviews of your supplier, pick up location and vehicle type.

This will give you a good impression of the level of service you will receive from our suppliers and of course us.

Optional Extras / Rental Agreement

I think I write about rental agreements every other post, so here it is again; upon collection of your hire you will be asked to sign a rental agreement, the rental agreement is your contract with the supplier. Please make sure you read this document and fully understand its contents before you sign it.

With regards to optional extra’s offered locally our suppliers may offer you the following

Personal accident insurance – Insures against person injury; items within this optional extra are generally covered by your travel insurance.

Pass24 or SunPass - This pass allows you to take advantage of the special automated lanes and speeds up your drive. Florida is slowly phasing out all manned toll booths but until then it is worth bearing in mind that dependant upon where you are going in Florida you may only come across one or two booths.

Advanced Roadside Assistance - We have covered this one in a  recent blog, remember your rental comes with basic roadside assistance this covers you for mechanical failure. The reservations staff locally may try to sell you advanced roadside assistance which covers instances such as losing your keys, running out of petrol and a lock out service.

Remember our reservation staff are always available to answer any query you may have either via the telephone on 0845 226 8523, via email or via our live chat facility located at the top of every page.

Kind regards,

James

4 Things Travel Writer Simon Calder Could Have Done To Prevent Car Hire Charge

Hi all,

I read an interesting article in the Independent on Friday regarding celebrity travel writer Simon Calder’s experience renting a Car in California, you can read the full article here but to cut a long story short, Simon discovered on his return that he had been charged for an upgrade locally that to his knowledge he had not agreed to.

On investigation Simon was shown a rental agreement that he had signed unwittingly agreeing to the charge and upgrade.

Here are 4 things Simon could have done to help avoid his situation.

Read Your Rental Agreement

Simon stated in his article that he was “Weary, after a flight of nearly 12 hours” and yes he probably was, we all generally are and that’s even if you don’t have children with you.

However the rental agreement that Simon signed is a contract between the driver and the supplier and should be read fully and only signed once you are happy you fully understand it. Remember this is a legal document and requires your full attention.

Supplier Guarantee

Something Simon could have been told about is the suppliers 24 hour satisfaction guarantee, most car rental suppliers offer a no quibble refund on anything purchased locally if they are contacted within 24 hours of purchase.

The details of this can be found on the rental agreement and paperwork offered at the time of collection.

Tip: When you’ve reached your accommodation and are relaxing just give the rental agreement a quick once over.

Pre-Register

At certain locations with suppliers, customers are offered the opportunity to pre-register their details before they arrive in the U.S.

By pre-registering your details, for example with Dollar Rent A Car you can take advantage of a dedicated line and in some instances go straight through to the car park to collect your vehicle without having to even speak to the person on the desk.

Tip: You can pre-register your details on usrentacar.co.uk by clicking  here

How Car Manufacture’s Are Improving Connection Safety

Hi all,

Here in the UK we are use to not being able to operate our phones while driving, however in the U.S. this is pretty much a new concept especially texting;  which is being met with some resistance.

A distraction motorist lobbying group point to studies, including one by researchers at Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, which show that talking on a mobile phone increases the risk of a crash or near-crash by 1.3 times over regular driving, while physically dialing a number increased the risk 2.8 times. A person is more than 20 times more likely to be in a crash or near crash while sending text messages.

Such data, which was gathered by monitoring hundreds of hours of drivers with cameras in day-to-day driving, has guided auto makers and the administration to the conclusion that “hands-free” activities are safe.

Car manufactures are looking in to ways of making connection from your motor safer and more assessable .

I mentioned in a previous post how the Chevy Cruze is integrating with facebook to allow status updates via voice controls and how other manufactures we’re looking too tap in to social media to not only embed the most up to date technology but to also help make sharing safer, below are a few examples of technology we can expect this year.

General Motors

This spring GM will release an 8-inch, touch-screen display for online applications, navigation and music that can be activated through voice, touch or steering wheel controls.

Ford Motors

Ford already allows drivers to receive Twitter feeds and stream online music through its Sync technology.

Mercedes Benz

New Mercedes-Benz cars this spring will tap into Facebook and perform Google searches. Mercedes drivers won’t be able to enter text while the car is in drive, but prewritten phrases can be selected with a click.

Are there any features you’d like to see added?

Version 1.2 Of The usrentacar Voucher App Now Available

Hi all,

Have you downloaded the usrentacar voucher app?

If your answer is yes, then well done you’re obviously very clever and probably very attractive….oh and check your updates…

If the answer is no, then get yourself to the app store as we’ve just added new features.

This morning apple approved the latest version of the usrentacar voucher app version 1.2. The voucher app’s primary role allows our customers to produce their phone instead of the usual paper voucher.

Other functions include our exclusive wait time feature and our live review option allowing customers to provide a photo and comments regarding their USA car hire.

New features

The major new feature of the usrentacar voucher app is the introduction of our Car Finder feature.

Car Finder takes advantage of the iPhones built in gps feature, and is designed to help you find your vehicle after a long day at the theme parks or a hard day shopping at the Mall.

We’ve also integrated a few Push reminders to make our customers aware of when their vouchers are ready and prompt them to add their wait time and personal review.

I’ll post further information about this features next week but in the mean time, what are you waiting for, getting downloading now…

Search “usrentacar” in the app store or click here.
