Phoenix Airport Goes Green To Off Set Car Rental Footprint

Hi all,

As we all know the U.S. are one of the Worlds biggest polluters, with such a vast Country car rental is a must.

So its great to see Phoenix International Airport going on the front foot to set new standards in off setting their carbon footprint.

On February 22nd 2012 Phoenix announced they had erected a 5.4-megawatt high efficiency SunPower solar power system. The panels are currently located at three airport rooftop locations: the rental car center and two parking garages.

The solar panels will generate 51% of the electricity demands at the airport’s rental car center, the two parking garages and toll plaza. The energy savings is estimated at $4.7 million over the next 20 years.

Research provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states the solar panel system will offset the production of more than 5,500 tons of carbon dioxide per year — equivalent to removing 19,800 cars from Arizona’s roads over the next 20 years.

It will be interesting to see if other Airports take note of Phoenix’s example and begin to install solar energy systems.

regards,

James
