Interesting story on mashable following up on a story we reported on back in October last year regarding Google’s attempt to introduce self driving vehicles.
Well it looks like they are beginning to take the process one stage further by lobbying Nevada state for permission to allow autonomous vehicles on public roads!
Mashable writes
Google has created a line of self-driving hybrids, including six Toyota Priuses and an Audi TT. The vehicles have been tested on more than 140,000 miles of California roads, at least 1,000 of which were driven fully autonomously.
It is believed that Google, who have hired Las Vegas based lobbyist David Goldwater, will try to amend two state laws, firstly regarding texting while in control of a motor vehicle and secondly to allow the testing of self driving cars on public roads.
Google will site safety as its main feature for altering legislation.
Exciting news from google yesterday and something that perhaps you wouldn’t associate with the search giant.
Google announced via their blog that they have developed technology that will allow cars to drive themselves! Yep just like KIT…
Using video cameras, radar sensors and a laser range finders to “see” other traffic and detailed maps, google have designed a self driving car that has already clocked up more than 140,000 miles.
Google stated “Our automated cars, manned by trained operators, just drove from our Mountain View campus to our Santa Monica office and on to Hollywood Boulevard. They’ve driven down Lombard Street, crossed the Golden Gate bridge, navigated the Pacific Coast Highway, and even made it all the way around Lake Tahoe.”
Exciting times at google, and good to see a very powerful company pushing the boundaries of technology. Would be nice to be renting self driven cars out to customer via usrentacar.co.uk
Each week, millions of users around the world search for health information online. As you might expect, there are more flu-related searches during flu season, more allergy-related searches during allergy season, and more sunburn-related searches during the summer. You can explore all of these phenomena using Google Insights for Search. But can search query trends provide the basis for an accurate, reliable model of real-world phenomena?
We have found a close relationship between how many people search for flu-related topics and how many people actually have flu symptoms. Of course, not every person who searches for “flu” is actually sick, but a pattern emerges when all the flu-related search queries are added together. We compared our query counts with traditional flu surveillance systems and found that many search queries tend to be popular exactly when flu season is happening. By counting how often we see these search queries, we can estimate how much flu is circulating in different countries and regions around the world.
Now before you say it, yes I do have too much time on my hands…. however I thought this was a pretty good way of using the google Street View technology to perhaps help usrentacar?customers to navigate around the roads near their collect point.
Check out Airport Blvd Orlando?for collections from Orlando International Airport.
Pretty impressive stuff from the Google team, it obviously raises tons of privacy issues and terrorism concerns but for this type of thing its pretty amazing.
Are there any places you have looked up, that you think might be of interest to U.S. Rent A Car customers?
What’s your opinion of Google Street View? Would you be keen to see us implement this technology in our search results?
Regards,
Gavin
