What To Take On Your Road Trip In The USA

Hi all,

Road trips are extremely popular at the moment  and the USA has some veryroad-trip icon routes to follow, with Route 66 probably being the most famous.

Following on from our recent blog – How to plan a car hire usa road trip I have today put together a list of what to take with you on a road trip.

What to take with you on a road trip

  • Maps - Sat Nav’s are great, but always have a map just in case.
  • Blankets - Even though your first thought of the USA is warm sunshine parts of it, especially at night can be very cold.
  • Warm Clothing - Same as above really.
  • A Torch – self explanatory really, helpful to also pack some spare batteries.
  • First Aid Kit – Like a good boy scout, be prepared!
  • Drinking Water – Recommend amount in a desert is one gallon per day.
  • Mobile Phone - If you’re like me it permanently stuck to you anyway however communication can be key.
  • In Car Charger – As above
  • Oil, Anti Freeze and Petrol – Although the hire cars are serviced and checked regularly, its always a good idea to pack these in case of emergency.
  • Music
  • Cat Litter - Yeah I know, why would you take a cat on a road trip? however its not for the cat its for traction. If you get stuck in mud sprinkle some cat litter round your tire for traction. It also can be used to soak up oil etc
  • A Jack – Blow outs can happen.
  • Tyre Iron – As above
  • Jump Leads
  • Swiss Army Knife

Have I missed anything out?

Tell me about your road trip experiences.

How To Plan A Car Hire USA Road Trip

Hi all,

Ever fancied doing a road trip in the U.S.? Yeah me too… here is usrentacar.co.uk ‘s guide to planning the perfect car hire USA road trip.roadtrip

  1. Plan ahead. This is a road trip, and will involve some cost. However, you can make it as cheap or as expensive as you like, depending on accommodations, food, etc. Research the locations you are going to ahead of time you will be glad you did.
  2. Hire an appropriate vehicle you’re going to be spending a lot of time in this vehicle so make sure you pick something comfy and that can carry all your luggage.
  3. One Way Rental Costs remember to budget for the additional cost of picking up a vehicle in one location and dropping at another, Orlando to San Francisco for instance could add another $500 to your hire costs.
  4. Make a list of about 10-15 places you want to visit. It’s easier if you make the list so that you stop in places that connect. You will also get a keen feeling if you are being over ambitious or not, the USA is a big place and travelling does take up time.
  5. Decide exactly where you’re going to be and also how long you’re going to stay there. (i.e. Orlando, Florida 3days)
  6. Make sure you and your travel companions can all get time off – it sometimes helps to book a few extra days off at the end to recover, travelling is tiring.
  7. Go online to usrentacar and take advantage of our trip planning section
  8. Accommodation shop around for hotel details and use sites like bargain villas for great rates on privately owned holiday homes.
  9. Hire A Sat Nav although part of the fun of a road trip is getting lost, America is a big place and having a Sat Nav is a nice safety blanket.
  10. Maps if you’re going to use maps, print a few copies off.

I’m sure I’ve probably forgotten something, if I have, please feel free to comment below.

For those of you starting a road trip, have fun and enjoy the experience.

Kind regards,

James

Queuing Still The Top USA Car Hire Pet Peeve

Hi all,

Just got some interesting data from the nerds at usrentacar HQ regardingrant things that just get your back up about car hire.

In true family fortunes style, we surveyed 100 people (lead drivers) collecting car rentals in the USA in July 2010 and asked them to rate their experiences and comment on possible improvements (if applicable).

Here are the top five pet peeves.

  1. Queuing - on average customers were willing to wait up to 15 mins to get to the car counter, anything after this was deemed unreasonable.
  2. Hard sell – generally the people surveyed were not against being offered the chance to upgrade their car hire, what they didn’t like was the feeling of being pressured to accept.
  3. Dirty cars – should never really happen, as our hire is pre-paid they know when you are coming, but the 3rd  most popular pet peeve was a dirty interior.
  4. Credit Cards – having to produce a credit card to collect your vehicle put some of your backs up (Alamo have been pro-active on this http://blog.usrentacar.co.uk/index.php/2010/07/01/alamo-car-hire-now-accepting-visa-debit-deposit/)
  5. Not getting the make I wanted – Not a lot we can do about this one I’m afraid, we never guarantee make or model of any of our suppliers vehicles but perhaps these blog’s could help (http://blog.usrentacar.co.uk/index.php/2010/07/06/dollar-car-hire-confirm-customer-choice-for-us-rent-a-car-clients/ and http://blog.usrentacar.co.uk/index.php/2009/09/29/alamo-car-hire-choice-product/)

I hate queuing so I think that would also be my major grievance.

What things about car hire in the USA get on your nerves?

James

USA To Charge $14 To Enter Country

The US government is to start charging UK travellers $14 (£9) to apply for permission to enter the country.

The compulsory Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (Esta) is free at present, but from 9 September visitors to the US will have to pay for it.

It lasts for two years; people who already have a valid form will not have to pay until their current one expires.

The scheme was introduced in January 2009 but was made mandatory from January 2010.

It applies to all 35 countries with US “visa waiver” status.

Promote tourism

The Electronic System for Travel Authorisation form, which takes up to 72 hours to be approved, gives air passengers prior approval for entry to the US.

It replaced the green I-94 card which passengers have previously filled in on their flight into the US.

End Quote Martin Lewis MoneySavingExpert.com

Most people who fill in the form should receive approval from the US Department of Homeland Security within a few minutes.

But British Airways and American Airlines are advising travellers to apply at least 72 hours in advance.

Both airlines have said people without valid Esta forms or visas will not be allowed to board flights to the US.

The fee has been introduced to fund a programme which aims to promote tourism in the US and attract foreign spending.

Martin Lewis, creator of MoneySavingExpert.com, has urged people even considering a trip to the US to apply for a form now to beat the charge.

He said: “The security authorisation lasts for two years, so do it now and it’ll be free if you travel in that time. Yet leave it for a month and you’ll have to pay for it.

New Car Rental Facility At Miami Is A Hit

Hi all,

As reported back in July, Miami International Airport has recently upgraded its car hire facility, spending a whooping $480 million on it.RCC-lobby

First reports from our customer seem to suggest its money well spent.

Mr Neil Maitland commented “Nice new rental car building at Miami Airport made collection and drop off very straight forward”

Mr Philip Carson added “Miami airport is a pleasure to hire a car from now. You catch any shuttle bus and they take you to a new building that all the car suppliers are there I was in and out within 15 minutes”

Mr Andrew Johnson wrote “The new rental centre at Miami Airport was excellent. When the rail link to it is complete it will be even better.”

Have you used the new car rental facility, what are your thoughts?
