Have You Driven? – Seven Mile Bridge, Florida

The Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys must rank up there among the top must roads to drives.seven-mile-bridge

The spectacular bridge has attracted many film makers. Its film ‘credits’ include scenes in True Lies, 2 Fast 2 Furious, the James Bond film Licence to Kill, CrissCross, and Up Close & Personal.

It runs over a channel between the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Strait, connecting Knight’s Key (part of the city of Marathon, Florida) in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys.

Among the longest bridges in existence when it was built, it is one of the many bridges on US 1 in the Keys, where the road is called the Overseas Highway.

Have you ever driven this?

What was it like?

Can you think of other must drive locations?

My Orlando Balloon Ride Pictures

Hi all,

It was nearly 5am when we set off to be Richard Branson for a couple of hours. I was really tired, a bit cold and wondering if this was the stupidest thing I’d ever done.

We drove away from International drive for about 30 mins in a large 8 seater minivan. The driver informed us that the launch site was an old hippy camp and the owner loved hot air balloons and let them launch from there for free.

balloon1We got stuck in straight away and started to help put up the balloon, part of the experience was getting your hands dirt and mucking in.

balloon2There were 2 other balloons due to fly that morning and I think due to my help we were the last to actually set up!!

balloon3The heat from the burner was incredible and I’m pretty sure I lost an eyebrow.

balloon4We set off a little after 8am, slightly later than usual.

Not a view for someone who is scared of heights. The feeling of being very high up in a balloon is something I would highly recommend.

balloon7The views were breath taking.

Our landing on the other hand was something to be desired, we “crash landed” in an orange tree field and had to wait to be rescued, while holding down a very heavy hot air balloon!

Consolidated USA Car Rental Facility Opens In Miami

Miami International has unveiled its new consolidated rental car garage, a facility that will house 16 rental companies and their 6,500 cars.miamilocation

Located east of the airport, the building’s first three levels are dedicated to storing and maintaining cars and the top floor is a customer service lobby. A fleet of buses will transport travelers to and from the terminals, eliminating the need for rental companies to operate their own shuttles.

The $480 million facility is the first phase of a broader construction project by the Florida Department of Transportation to build a major “intermodal center” that will house the county’s metro rail and buses, Amtrak and possibly high speed rail service.

Alamo Issue Availability Warning For Florida

Hi guys,

Just a quick heads up, just received a call about Alamo Rent A Car warning us that 7 Seaters, 8 Seaters and 15str Minivans for July and August are close to going on stop sale.

Stop sale is car hire terminology that basically mean’s the supplier has rented out all of those specific vehicles.

Reasons for the stop sale can only be speculated about perhaps the  popularity of Harry Potter at Universal is one reason.

On a plus note at present Budget Rent A Car and Dollar Rent A Car have stated that their fleet utilisation is running to plan and they have no intention of issuing stop sales.

7 seater minivans and 8 seater minivan can be rented by visiting usrentacar.co.uk.

Kind regards,

James Thomas,

Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport Opens

A new airport in north-west Florida will open up the region to international tourists, according to the state’s tourism authority.

Northwest Florida Beaches international airport opened last Sunday, meaning a Gatwick connection to north-west Florida is now anoption with Delta Airlines via Atlanta.

Visit Florida chief executive Chris Thompson said the new airport would improve access to the Emerald Coast. This is a less well-known part of Florida, historically visited only by Americans because of the poor air access.

“Of Florida’s visitors, 95% have been before, so we are trying to market areas that people don’t know much about,” he said. “The airport will help visitors discover a hidden treasure.”

Southwest Airlines is providing the new airport with eight daily flights from Orlando,Nashville, Baltimore and Houston.

The new flights will allow Brits to combine the theme parks with the beach attractions of Panama City, Destin and Fort Walton Beach in one holiday.

Local tourist boards hope the improved access will convince British operators to include the area in their programmes.

Direct flights from the UK are a long-term goal for the airport, which has a 10,000ft runway and seven gates.

Susan Estler, vice-president of marketing for the Panama City Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, said: “We will make continued efforts to get other carriers into the airport. Virgin Atlantic flights would be wonderful.”
