Golden Ticket Awards 2011 Results

Hi all,

Last year I reported on the “Oscars of the Theme park world”, The Golden Ticket Awards.

Well today I have been sent the list of finalist and winners.

About the awards

Now in its 14th year the Golden Ticket Awards are the most sought-after awards in the business of amusements and attractions. The awards are calculated from an international poll conducted by Amusement Today, the Golden Ticket Awards are the results of a detailed survey that is sent to a database of experienced and well-traveled amusement park fans around the world – in balanced geographical regions – asking them to rate the “bests” in 25 categories such as “amusement parks,” “roller coasters,” “food,” “Halloween and Christmas events” and “water rides.”

My Top 5 Thrill Rides In Florida- Dragon Challenge

Hi all,

Final day of my top 5 thrill rides in Florida. Monday featured the music loving Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios, Tuesday’s post was all about the unique riding experience of Manta at SeaWorld, Wednesday’s Coaster was the scream inducing Sheikra at Busch Gardens and Thrusday belonged to the big, green speed machine known as the Incredible Hulk Ride at Islands of Adventure.

Today’s ride is actually two rides… Dragon Challenge at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Dragon Challenge at Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The dragon challenge at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter places you right in the middle of the tri-wizard tournament.

Are you brave enough to ride one of the most ferocious dragons in the Wizarding World? Either the Chinese Fireball or the Hungarian Horntail!

Of course the dragons don’t want you on their backs, so they will try and throw you off by looping the loop, flying toward walls at break neck speeds and at one point playing chicken with each other.

The Dragon Challenge is the only dual inverted roller coaster in the World; each Dragon gives the rider a completely unique riding experience.

Roller Coaster Information

The Height Requirement for both Dragons on the Dragon Challenge is 54?

Chinese Fireball

Height: 125 ft (38.1 m)

Drop: 115 ft (35.1 m)

Length: 3200 ft (975.4 m)

Max speed: 60mph (96.6 km/h)

Inversions: 5

Hungarian Horntail

Height: 125 ft (38.1 m)

Drop: 95 ft (35. 1m)

Length: 3200 ft (975.4 m)

Max speed: 55mph (96.6 km/h)

Inversions: 5

Wizarding Tip – For the best ride experience try and get a front row seat when riding the Hungarian Horntail however for the Chinese Fireball try and get seats on the back row, the G-Force is increased at the back!

Wizarding Fact – When the trains are loaded, they are weighed as they are being dispatched in order to properly time the near-miss points.

The rides main talking point is the near miss part of the ride as competitors come within 18 inches of each other.

usrentacar.co.uk offer great rates of Florida attraction tickets the Orlando Flex Ticket or the Universal bonus tickets get you entry in to Universal Islands of Adventure for up to 14 days.

My Top 5 Thrill Rides In Florida – The Incredible Hulk Coaster

Hi all,

Day 4 of my top 5 Thrill Rides in Florida, day 1 featured the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios, day 2 was dedicated too SeaWorld’s unique coaster, Manta and yesterday, Day 3 we popped down to Tampa to ride SheiKra at Busch Gardens.

Today’s roller coaster can be found at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in the Marvel zone and literally stands out!

The Incredible Hulk Coaster at Universal’s Islands of Adventure

It’s big, it’s green and it’s fast….

The Incredible Hulk Coaster is 110 feet high and features my favourite ever start to a ride. As per the origins of the Hulk, the ride begins in a Gamma tube, riders slowly begin to rise up the hill to the sounds of Dr Bruce Banner during testing.

“Everything looks good…I think…I think this time it’s…going to work!”

At this point a mechanical voice interrupts stating there has been an error, loud klaxon’s sound and Dr Bruce Banner can be heared screaming

No. No! No!!!…….Noooooooooooooo

and this is where it gets good….. the rider is then catapulted from 0-40mph in 2 sec’s up the 110ft hill, from the dark of the Gamma tube to the bright Orlando sun…

…straight  into a zero-g roll, down a 105-foot (32 m) drop, and into a cobra roll. Riders complete a vertical loop, then enter a tunnel full of mist. At this point of the ride, the train’s speed has reached approximately 65 mph. The train encircles the gamma tube and is sent into the back area via corkscrew. A smaller vertical loop wraps around the brake run, which is flanked by two over-banked turns. The coaster is slowed down by the brake run before being sent down another hill to a corkscrew and turn-around. Riders then travel sideways through an on-ride camera zone and then to the ride’s final brakes after a helix.

Ride facts

Height - 110 ft (34 m)

Drop - 105 ft (32 m)

Length - 3,700 ft (1,100 m)

Max speed - 67 mph (108 km/h)

Inversions – 7

Duration - 2:15

Capacity - 1920 riders per hour

Acceleration – 0 ? 40 mph in 2 seconds, producing 1.42 G’s

Max G force – 4Gs

Height restriction – 4 ft 6 in (137 cm)

The talking point of this ride is the beginning, for first time riders who aren’t expecting the sudden burst of power it will have you giggling while pinned to your seat.

usrentacar.co.uk offer great rates of Florida attraction tickets the Orlando Flex Ticket or the Universal bonus tickets get you entry in to Universal Islands of Adventure for up to 14 days.

My Top 5 Thrill Rides In Florida – SheiKra

Hi all,

Day 3 of my personal favourite Thrill rides and roller coasters in Florida. At present I’ve covered Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit and Manta, today’s coaster is Busch Gardens adrenaline boosting SheiKra, a drop coaster that you’ll never forget.

SheiKra at Busch Gardens, Tampa

SheiKra was actually the last coaster I rode on my trip around Florida, and it turned out to be one I’d never forget.

The unique selling point of SheiKra is the 200 ft delayed drop. Let me explain…

After getting on board and leaving the station, you begin to climb a 47 degree 200-foot lift hill. SkeiKra is in no rush to get you to the top so you get a great look round the park while at the same time building the suspense. The train then makes a U-turn and approaches the holding brake, which suspends the train for about 3–5 seconds on the precipice of the sheer 90-degree drop, now I’m quite confident in stating that at this point I have never been on a ride that produces so many screams from its riders. At the height of these screams you are released and plummet down and into a loop.

The ride does continue on from this point but not for long and to be honest I was so taken back by the drop I can’t remember much after it. :-)

Ride Facts

  • 200-foot 45-degree chain lift hill
  • 195-foot 90° drop
  • 140-foot-tall Immelmann
  • 138-foot 81° drop
  • Top speed 70 mph.

The very obvious talking point of this ride and one I still mention today is the 3-5 second delay, it really builds the suspension. Top tip, if you don’t like screaming wear ear plugs!!!

usrentacar.co.uk offer great rates of Florida attraction tickets the Orlando Flex Ticket or the Bonus  tickets get you entry in to Busch Gardens for up to 14 days.

My Top 5 Thrill Rides In Florida – Manta

Hi all,

Yesterday I began describing my top 5 roller coasters in Florida, my first choice was Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit located in Universal Studios Florida.

Today’s choice is Manta located within SeaWorld, Orlando. I almost didn’t get to ride this one as my visit coincided with torrential rain and lightening. As with all parks in Florida, all the rides shut when lightening’s about!

Manta at SeaWorld

The unique thing about Manta is your riding position, unlike traditional roller coasters instead of riding as if sitting down, the ride takes you round the 3,359 feet of track face down, giving the illusion of flying.

Manta includes four inversions and reaches speeds in excess of 56 mph. Statistically, this makes Manta the second-longest (3,359 ft), tallest (140 ft) and fastest (56 mph) flying roller coaster in the world.

Officially Manta lasts 2 mins 35 seconds, in reality it seems much quicker, at its peak it serves 1500 rides per hour and boasts a G-Force rating of 3.7, what’s not to like :-)

Manta starts of with a  climb of 140-foot. At the top, you take your first  dive down towards the right and then swoops upward, don’t forget to smile as you pass the on-ride photo camera located to before you begin the 98-foot pretzel loop.

You then dive head first to the ground and then climb back to the top of the element. Next up you take a U-turn to the left through the pretzel loop, after which it encounters a counter-clockwise inline twist. As Manta exits the twist, it enters a 270-degree downward helix to the right, passing close to the ground below and crossing through the pretzel loop a second time as it enters its first corkscrew. After the corkscrew, the train climbs up above the station’s return track and reaches the mid-course brake run.

Manta enters the second part of the course by diving down towards a lagoon near the theme park entrance, banking to the right as it approaches. The wings of the lead car appear to skim the surface, kicking up a splash of water (created instead by timed water jets).

The train rises, still banked to the right, before diving again, this time towards a waterfall as it continues turning to the right. After missing the waterfall by inches, Manta then enters its final inversion, a second corkscrew, prior to a final U-turn leading to the final brake run and the return to the station.

Manta’s riding position gives you a truly unique experience, trying to stop the urge not to put your hands out to protect yourself on a few of the drops is impossible.

The talking point for this ride is definitely how close to the ground you think you are… in reality you’re nowhere near it.

usrentacar.co.uk offer great rates of Florida attraction tickets the Orlando Flex Ticket or the Bonus  tickets get you entry in to SeaWorld for up to 14 days.

My Top 5 Thrill Rides In Florida – Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

Hi all,

As you may have read previously in the blog, I recently had the pleasure of visiting Orlando with the UK Universal and SeaWorld team. I was very lucky to ride every roller coaster and thrill ride available at Island’s of Adventure, Universal Studios, SeaWorld and Busch Gardens.

This week I will count down my top 5 must ride coasters in Florida, starting with Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studio’s.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studio’s

I like roller coasters and I like music, imagine putting them together and I’d be in thrill ride heaven…

Well that’s exactly what Universal have done here. Unique to another coaster I’ve ever ridden, you have 45 Seconds to select a tune of your choice to “enjoy” while flying round the 3800ft track.

Song List

Universal Studios Florida unveiled the thirty available songs for the attraction on July 6, 2009:

  • Classic rock and heavy metal
    “Bring Me to Life,” Evanescence
    “Paralyzer,” Finger Eleven
“Born to be Wild,” Hinder (a cover version of the song originally performed by Steppenwolf)
    “Rollin’,” Limp Bizkit
    “Kickstart My Heart,” Mötley Crüe
“Gimme All Your Lovin’,” ZZ Top
  • Club and electronica
    “Intergalactic”, Beastie Boys
    “Busy Child,” The Crystal Method
“Keep Hope Alive,” The Crystal Method
“Harder Better Faster Stronger,” Daft Punk
    “Pump Up the Volume,” MARRS
    “Le Disko,” Shiny Toy Guns
  • Country music
“Midnight Rider,” The Allman Brothers Band
“The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” The Charlie Daniels Band
    “Guitars, Cadillacs,” Dwight Yoakam
“I Can Sleep When I’m Dead,” Jason Michael Carroll
“Living in Fast Forward,” Kenny Chesney
    “All Night Long,” Montgomery Gentry
  • Rap and hip-hop
    “Sabotage,” Beastie Boys
“Don’t Phunk with My Heart,” The Black Eyed Peas
“Pump It,” The Black Eyed Peas
“Insane in the Brain,” Cypress Hill
    “Stronger,” Kanye West
    “Rock Star,” N.E.R.D.
  • Pop music and disco
    “Bad Girls,” Donna Summer
    “Glamorous,” Fergie
    “I Will Survive,” Gloria Gaynor
“That’s the Way (I Like It),” KC and the Sunshine Band
“U Can’t Touch This,” MC Hammer
    “Hella Good,” No Doubt
In addition to these 30 songs, Universal Studios Florida also provided additional “hidden” songs that are available to riders, but are not included in the on-ride video if the rider chooses to purchase it
I picked The Beastie Boys, Sabotage, it worked a treat! :-)
When you leave the station, you begin a slow vertical climb of 167 feet, it takes 16 seconds to reach the top and if you’re brave enough to move your head you can get a great view of Universal Studios before you plunge 170 feet at 65 mph straight in to a twisted loop, like a normal loop the loop but at the top it twists so that the passenger is right side up when descending…
One thing you may want to remember to avoid embarrisment is that the whole time you’re riding the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit you’re being filmed in your very own music video…. I was very lucky (insert sarcasm) to have my video played to our group, showing me widely singing and giggling like a school girl!! :-)
A truly brilliant ride and one I could honest ride time and time again, the music element not only adds to the experience but provides a great “after roller coaster” conversation, “what music did you pick?”.
usrentacar.co.uk offer great rates of Florida attraction tickets the Orlando Flex Ticket or the Universal bonus tickets get you entry in to Universal Studio’s for up to 14 days.
