Is This What The Next Ford Mustang Will Look Like?

Hi all,

Here at U.S. Rent A Car we are obsessed with the Ford Mustang, we’ve learnt over time that our customers are as well, the Ford Mustang continues to be our most requested vehicle. So much so we negotiated our own Ford Mustang category.

Will the Ford Mustang still be relevant in the future?

I think the simple answer is yes, its an iconic vehicle with history stretching back to the 1960′s. The Mustang myth is known for pushing the boundaries of not only power and speed but design…

So what will the next wave of Ford Mustang’s look like?

Well rumour has it that the new design for the Ford Mustang will hit our roads in 2015. The look is being described as “radical”. What we do know is that the 2015 Mustang will replace the traditional solid rear axle suspension with an independent rear suspension, and that an EcoBoost engine option will be available, likely as a turbocharged 4-cylinder, as well as a smaller-displacement, high-output V6 (code-named Nano) and V8 engine.

Now to the perceived styling… experts believe the Mustang will based on the Ford concept car, the Evos and will look something like this…

So tell me, what do you think. Is this the Florida car hire experience you’ve been dreaming of…?

15 Ways To Spot A Drink Driver

Hi all,

If all 17 million people who admitted to driving drunk in 2010 had their own state, it would be the fifth largest in the U.S.

Drink driving in the states is still a major problem, over 1.4 million drivers were arrested in 2010 for driving whilst under the influence. It’s terrifying statistics like this and personal experience that lead to the founding of MADD.org Mothers Against Drink Driving; please visit their website and read through their informative site and their heart wrenching stories.

Today’s post is to highlight MADD’s campaign to eliminate drunk driving, MADD themselves are lobbying to turn cars into the cure however families must continue to be vigilant on our roadways. Here are 15 ways to spot a drink driver.

  1. Quick acceleration or deceleration
  2. Tailgating
  3. Weaving or zig-zagging across the road
  4. Driving anywhere other than on a road designated for vehicles
  5. Almost striking an object, curb, or vehicle
  6. Stopping without cause or erratic braking
  7. Drifting in and out of traffic lanes
  8. Signaling that is inconsistent with driving actions
  9. Slow response to traffic signals (e.g. sudden stop or delayed start)
  10. Straddling the center lane marker
  11. Driving with headlights off at night
  12. Swerving
  13. Driving slower than 10 mph below the speed limit
  14. Turning abruptly or illegally
  15. Driving into opposing traffic on the wrong side of the road

But what do I do if I spot someone drinking under the influence?

First, stay as far away from the other vehicle as possible.
Second, do not try to pass the vehicle or signal the driver to pull over.  Doing so could result in a collision.
Third, take notice of the license plate number of the driver along with details of the vehicle including make, model and color. However, make sure you don’t compromise your own safety trying to obtain this information.
Finally, pull over and call 911.  Give the exact location of the vehicle, including the name of the road or cross streets and the direction the vehicle is traveling. Give a complete description of the vehicle and the manner in which the vehicle is being driven.

With your help MADD.org can make a real difference.

usrentacar.co.uk Scores A Hat-Trick At British Travel Awards

Hi all,

With the Premier League ending in such dramatic fashion I thought it only apt to mention our good news in a footballing style., hence the hat-trick reference.

Today I’m happy to announce that usrentacar.co.uk has been nominated for the 3rd year in a row for best car hire company at the British Travel Awards.

We are delighted to have been selected again and hope to make it 3rd time lucky.

About the British Travel Awards

BTA’s chief executive Lorraine Barnes Burton said: “The British Travel Awards are widely considered to be the “Oscars” of the travel industry!  It’s the largest awards programme in the UK created to reward travel companies and the winning accolade is the benchmark for excellence when it comes to finding out who really is the best in the business of travel for the UK consumer.”

Companies were nominated by travel industry professionals and a selection of the previous year’s consumer voters, and the shortlisted companies now go to the consumer voting stage. In 2010 over 120,000 votes were cast with the results scrutinized and audited by Deloitte LLP.  The winners of the 2012 British Travel Awards will be announced at a glittering ceremony on 1st November at the Battersea Evolution in Battersea Park, London.

I will post again to advise you all on how to vote for your favourite USA car hire site.

1 In 5 People Upgrade Upon Arrival

Hi all,

Fresh data out today provided from The National Canstar Blue survey, states that 1 in 5 people upgrade their vehicle upon arrival to take advantage of driving a vehicle they would never normally be able to afford.

The survey goes on to state that Men are more likely to upgrade than Women and that drivers classed as generation Y renters are even more likely to upgrade then previous generations.

Rebecca Logan, a manager at Canstar Blue stated

These results show that a sizeable group of car hire customers are happy to invest a bit extra for the luxurious experience of driving and being seen in a car beyond their means in everyday life. This isn’t surprising, given many travellers adopt a more lax mindset when enjoying themselves away from home.

Interesting point, I’m sure we all are little more generous and perhaps even lax with our budgeting when on holiday however  the amazing part about upgrading locally to me, is that in most cases the cost to upgrade is more expensive than it would have been to pre-pay for the vehicle in the UK, in some cases as much as 50% more!

I posted back in April 2011 regarding the choice to upgrade locally or upgrade before you go, I had no idea that so many opted to do this in the U.S.

Remember if you upgrade locally your contract is with the supplier and not usrentacar, we cannot obtain refunds for customers if they have signed locally agreeing to the local terms. Please read everything carefully before signing.

What’s your opinion on upgrading locally?

James

The Car Rental Show In Tweets

Hi all,

The annual Car Rental Show hosted in Las Vegas has just finished, for those of you unfamiliar with The Car Rental Show (CRS), it offers the opportunity for the industry to come together and learn from each other and help provide a closer working relationship between the usually segregated industry.

Unfortunately like you, I was unable to attend this year event, however I was able to follow parts of it via twitter, so I thought I’d show below some of the more interesting tweets I noticed.

Ful Cygler says Florida is best market for newest vehicles#carrentalshow

NB: Our own statistic’s support this as well, with California a close second.

At the marketing table: everyone here agrees that Google is the most important search engine to b aware of #carrentalshow

NB: Not exactly ground breaking news, perhaps show’s how behind car rental is.

more dealers are going to enter the market, Kushner says#carrentalshow

NB: Great for the consumer, at present approximately 4 car rental suppliers own the market, more competitors = better rates.

Chris Brown: It’s not about the rental car, its about the car rental process #carrentalshow

NB: Customer services is your best USP?

Mark Frissora, Hertz CEO: “customers are smarter than they ever have been” #carrentalshow

NB: Suggesting that customers were stupid before ;-)

Frissora says int’l travel is expected to double to $2T in 2020#carrentalshow

NB: $2 trillion!!! Wowsers…

He says that off-airport rental is a fast-growing source for leisure and business rentals #carrentalshow

NB: I believe this aimed at U.S. travellers not European

Technology is ‘Putting the power of companies in the hands of consumers’ – Mark Frissora Hertz #carrentalshow

NB: Positive or a negative?

Freeman: “we’ve only skimmed the surface of what this industry can do.” #carrentalshow

NB: Very true.

Barton: “be a fire prevention officer not a fire fighter” #carrentalshow

NB: Interesting buzz phrase.

Schalberg: keep the rental car counter free of clutter, separate back office papers from front counter papers #carrentalshow

46% of Facebook users say their travel destination was affected by what their Facebook community says #carrentalshow

NB: Does this ring true to you?

Some interesting things coming out of The Car Rental Show, although for me I’m still amazed at how slow the car rental industry moves to adopt new technology.

What do you think?

Phoenix Airport Goes Green To Off Set Car Rental Footprint

Hi all,

As we all know the U.S. are one of the Worlds biggest polluters, with such a vast Country car rental is a must.

So its great to see Phoenix International Airport going on the front foot to set new standards in off setting their carbon footprint.

On February 22nd 2012 Phoenix announced they had erected a 5.4-megawatt high efficiency SunPower solar power system. The panels are currently located at three airport rooftop locations: the rental car center and two parking garages.

The solar panels will generate 51% of the electricity demands at the airport’s rental car center, the two parking garages and toll plaza. The energy savings is estimated at $4.7 million over the next 20 years.

Research provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states the solar panel system will offset the production of more than 5,500 tons of carbon dioxide per year — equivalent to removing 19,800 cars from Arizona’s roads over the next 20 years.

It will be interesting to see if other Airports take note of Phoenix’s example and begin to install solar energy systems.

Driverless Car The Answer To Distraction? (Infographic)

Hi all,

As I previously posted about, Google have been working on a driverless car for a while now, the thought behind it is to help reduce the amount of fatal accidents that occur, with the rise of the smart phone and manufactures looking at how they can tap in to the social graph and improve connection the amount of distraction accidents looks to be heading towards a steep rise.

Is google’s autonomous vehicle the answer to safety fears?

Check out this great Infograph that seem to apply it is.

How Car Manufacture’s Are Improving Connection Safety

Hi all,

Here in the UK we are use to not being able to operate our phones while driving, however in the U.S. this is pretty much a new concept especially texting;  which is being met with some resistance.

A distraction motorist lobbying group point to studies, including one by researchers at Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, which show that talking on a mobile phone increases the risk of a crash or near-crash by 1.3 times over regular driving, while physically dialing a number increased the risk 2.8 times. A person is more than 20 times more likely to be in a crash or near crash while sending text messages.

Such data, which was gathered by monitoring hundreds of hours of drivers with cameras in day-to-day driving, has guided auto makers and the administration to the conclusion that “hands-free” activities are safe.

Car manufactures are looking in to ways of making connection from your motor safer and more assessable .

I mentioned in a previous post how the Chevy Cruze is integrating with facebook to allow status updates via voice controls and how other manufactures we’re looking too tap in to social media to not only embed the most up to date technology but to also help make sharing safer, below are a few examples of technology we can expect this year.

General Motors

This spring GM will release an 8-inch, touch-screen display for online applications, navigation and music that can be activated through voice, touch or steering wheel controls.

Ford Motors

Ford already allows drivers to receive Twitter feeds and stream online music through its Sync technology.

Mercedes Benz

New Mercedes-Benz cars this spring will tap into Facebook and perform Google searches. Mercedes drivers won’t be able to enter text while the car is in drive, but prewritten phrases can be selected with a click.

Are there any features you’d like to see added?

James
